They have teamed up with The New York Times to create a Year in Rap contest! Unfortunately, you must be 13 to officially enter, so I thought we'd have a contest of our own in the sixth grade! Follow this link to find details on how to create a Year in Rap based on events that interested you in 2011. The New York Times has made it easy by creating links to this past year's news through categories such as sports, business, world, fashion, science, arts, etc.

There is also a link to the rubric. Follow this rubric to earn a Homework Replacement Pass, which will allow you to be excused from an 8-10 point homework assignment of your choice. To earn the Homework Replacement Pass, you must earn 9-12 points on the rubric; this means don't waste your time on this assignment unless you are going to commit to a quality finished product. You will need to print a copy of your lyrics to turn in. We will vote (entries will be anonymous to students) based on your lyrics.

You also have the option of recording your rap either as a video or just vocally! You will need to save any recording on your flash drive (or the H: Drive at school) so that we can see your performance! If you choose to take your project to this level, you will receive a slip of Maass Money in addition to your Homework Replacement Pass.

All entries are due Wednesday, Jan. 11. Again, please note you are not old enough to enter into the official contest; you will turn in your entries to me at school! Have fun!

Congratulations, Homebase!

Congratulations to my homebase! We have been doing a lot of writing recently in social studies, and the students have impressed me with their work! Students recently wrote a piece in response to whether or not a Spartan made a good mascot based on our readings of the Spartans. The sixth grade class was split pretty evenly on this debate! Students were also asked to do a writing piece from the perspective different than their own--as a character from one of the Greek myths we've been studying. Today, we moved to our next unit, Ancient Greece! This is always an exciting time of year as we step from basic geography to history thousands of years old! In class, we will be using Prentice Hall's History of Our World as a supplemental text. Although students won't have a hard copy of this book at home, students have access to History of Our World through the same online textbook link as their other textbook: https://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/snpapp/login/login.jsp. Students have ample class time to complete the Unit 1 Project; the project is not intended to be done in groups outside of school time. Students have been given directions as well as rubrics for their project, which can also be found on Parent Connect.

Although the students are working in groups, 30% of their grade is individualized. These individual points come from their presentation, in-class work ethic (as determined by me), and their peer evaluations (done in confidentiality by their group members). Our service projects range from activities at the school to service projects on a national level. We have taken part in activities such as engaging with BACC students, clothing drives, book exchanges, recycling, and others. Our activities change year to year based on where club members have an interest.

Students across all grade levels are welcome to join MAD Club as their schedule allows. We're a flexible group that accepts students also involved in other activities. As some students finish up a fall sport or activity, they may then join MAD Club. Our next meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 4) from 3-4:30. You can find our meeting times on the school calendar; I also have hard copies of calendars for students that would like one. At 7:35 (signaled by a bell), students are able to see teachers from whom they may need help. Students have that 15-minute window to get guidance from teachers. If no help is needed, they can stay in the gym and socialize from 7:35-7:50. Homework is not to be completed in the gym. Unless personally directed by a teacher, students shouldn't seek help from teachers sooner than 7:35.

Redo Pass

The first quiz in social studies is over! If you look in Parent Connect, you can see the score for the Chapter 1 Quiz. Many students proved that they studied hard by earning high grades on the quiz. For some students, they realized they may need to put more effort into their preparation for quizzes in social studies.

In class today, students received a "redo pass." In social studies, they will receive one "redo pass" that allows them to redo an assignment or quiz that at which they'd like to take another shot. Once the "redo pass" is used, they will not receive another until 2nd trimester. When using a "redo pass" on an assignment, students are encouraged to use their book and notes to correct answers that were wrong or to do the assignment completely over. They will turn in the new assignment with the pass attached to the 2nd attempt at an assignment.

When using the "redo pass" on a quiz, students are encouraged to use their book and notes to write the correct answer, next to the original answer on the quiz. Students will earn half credit for each question they redo correctly. For example, most quiz questions are worth 2 points. For every question the student answers correctly on the redo, they will receive 1 point back. There is typically a 2-day deadline on using a "redo pass" on a quiz. For instance, if a student chooses to use the "redo pass" for the Chapter 1 Quiz, quiz corrections must be done with the "redo pass" attached to the quiz by this Friday. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about this "second chance" opportunity.

Quizzes in Social Studies

Tomorrow will be our first quiz in social studies, which will cover Chapter 1 of the World Explorer textbook. The quiz process in this class is a 3-day process.

Day 1: Receive study guide. The study guide covers all the concepts that will appear on the quiz. It is up to the student to use his or her notes, worksheets, and book to complete the study guide as accurately and thoroughly as they can.

Day 2: Brief review of the numbered questions on the study guide, followed by a review. If the study guide is completely filled out, the student stays in class to take part in a class review game. If the study guide is incomplete, the student reviews independently in the IMC.

Day 3: Quiz! Unless told otherwise, students may not use the book, notes, or study guide to complete the quiz.

So on Friday students received their Chapter 1 Study Guide. In class today we are grading the 7 numbered questions on the study guide, followed by a class review game. If students did not complete the study guide, they are going to the IMC to complete the study guide and review independently. Based on the reviews we've had so far this morning, many students are ready for the quiz tomorrow!

Copies of Classwork

In addition to grades, you can also obtain copies of class worksheets on Parent Connect! In class today, I showed the students how to access copies of worksheets that are handed out in class. Students are able to open and print these from home! Assignments are found as links on the right side of the first screen you see after logging into Parent Connect.

Examples of when this feature would be handy is if a student loses a worksheet that they need. Rather than miss the assignment altogether, they have direct access to that worksheet from home! Also, if a student is absent and would like to obtain work missed from class, they would be able to do so. My expectation is that if a student loses a worksheet, they can log on to Parent Connect to print a new one.

Please note, not every paper from class may be posted. I will do my best to keep current worksheets updated. Not everything we do will be able to be formatted to be viewed on Parent Connect. A common error in the past has been made in Movie Maker. Although students remember to "save movie as," it is imperative that the step "save movie file" is done. Otherwise the project is still a movie maker file (which will not play anywhere but the computer it was created on), and not a wmv. file. Students are familiar with how to do it, as they have done it for several activities or projects at school, but it is sometimes a forgotten step. Be sure to complete this step or your project will not play at school, resulting in a late grade. I'm looking forward to seeing the news broadcasts next week!

Thank You & Current Events Project Update

Thank you to the Lakeview PTO for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week! Thanks for thinking of us and all of the effort you put into making us feel special this week!

We are more than halfway through the allotted time to complete the Current Events News Broadcast Project! The students have had about 4 days of class time to put their project together, and this past Wednesday was a check-in day to make sure students are on track. You have heard from me if they're not. Although many students are choosing to meet outside of school, the project is designed so that the work can be split up and completed individually. If you'd like more information on the project, all of the directions and rubric the students received can be found on Parent Connect.

Just a reminder, if a group is choosing to record their project (which is NOT a requirement) it is advised that the bring in their final project a day or 2 early to make sure it plays properly at school. This means students should be bringing in their final project to check no later than Thursday or Friday of last week.

A common error in the past (while using Windows Movie Maker) has been forgetting to do the final step: "Save Movie File." Students have the opportunity to research more about acid rain in Europe for an extra credit opportunity. If a student chooses to complete the extra credit, the assignment is due on May 6. Students received a hard copy of the requirements today in class, but as always, the extra credit guidelines can be found on Parent Connect. Just a reminder that I don't offer extra credit on an individual basis; if students are looking for extra credit to be used at any time throughout the trimester, they should be taking opportunities such as this. As with the other trimesters, students are also able to obtain extra credit through political cartoons (requirements also posted on Parent Connect). Testing will take place in the areas of math and reading and will be completed in the computer lab during social studies class. It is important that students get good rest these days as well as eat breakfast to "fuel their bodies!" Each homebase teacher has helped each student set personal goals for their test scores. We've also reviewed the importance of these tests as they are a piece of the puzzle for placement at Lakeview.

Current Events News Broadcast Project

This week students were introduced to the Current Events Project; they will be putting on a news broadcast! We began this project by looking at examples of years past so students can see what the general idea is. This was accompanied by a guidelines worksheet. Students then chose a group (individual up to 4 people total) to complete this long-term project. Students were given class time all week to begin (and in some cases complete) the project. The projects are due either May 16 or May 17, depending on the date they selected.

There are two ways students can present their projects:
1. Live in class
2. Record their production (requires a lot more work and time spent outside of school)

Neither method of presenting is better than the other, and we clearly covered that if the presentation is recorded, it is a much larger time commitment. The way the project is designed, the work can be split up amongst group members, so that if they do meet outside of school each member should have completed tasks so that they can get directly to recording. As in all group work, peer evaluation is part of the grade.

On Parent Connect you can find copies of the directions, plan sheet, and rubric, all of which students have received hard copies.

This is my favorite project of the school year, as this is a project that really allows students to showcase their talents and creativity! I look forward to seeing the finished products of this year's sixth grade class!

Europe Maps

Today we wrapped up our Renaissance and Reformation unit. I hope everyone enjoyed a warm and safe couple days off!

Checking Grades Online

Yesterday in class we discussed the importance of checking your grades online. Prentice Hall has made available to us World Explorer as well as History of Our World, which we will use in a couple months. During class today, each student registered at www.pearsonsuccessnet.com so that they have complete access to these textbooks. We also discovered that this website provides current events articles, reviews, maps, connections to the text and so on. We encourage students to explore the site! Ms. Hagensee also posted a link to the textbook on the IMC site, so students have easy access. We had a work day today, which also doubled as a check in day so that I could see the students' progress. I was very impressed that almost all groups are on track! Some groups were even ready to show me their final product today! Way to take action, students!

As a reminder, the project was assigned on April 9 and is due on either May 18 or 19, depending which day the student signed up for. The project is designed so that the work can be split up and that designated work days in class can be utilized to complete the project. This means the project can be completed without having to meet outside of school. However, many students are opting to meet outside of school time to collaborate with each other. Just a reminder, recording/filming the project is NOT a requirement. We've discussed in class that recording the project is a lot more time-consuming than sharing the project live in class. Again, many students are choosing to record their news broadcast! I can't wait to see the outcome; this is my favorite project of the year! This is the 2nd extra credit opportunity in 2 weeks, and there will most likely not be another opportunity this trimester, so it's a great time to do the assignment and apply the earned extra credit at any point during the trimester!

Current Events Project

6th Grade students were introduced to their Current Events Project today--a news broadcast! Students have chosen their groups and received directions and a rubric. This 106-point project is not due until mid-May; however, a mojority of the project will be done outside of school, which is why students have a little over 5 weeks to complete the project.

We will be working in class on Monday to set help guide the long-term planning. We will have another class work day midway through, which will also allow me to follow up and check in on their progress. Realistically, the project can be done with just a couple days' work, but with consideration to everyone's busy schedule, they have an abundance of time to complete the assignment. The project is also designed so that work can be divvied up so that students can work independently of each other. If you come across any questions in the process, please feel free to ask!

Vacation Work

Please note, if your student will be gone from school for vacation, I will try my best to give them what will be missed. Here are some reminders of things you can do to improve your grade:
1. Are you doing your homework and assignments on time?
2. Do you double-check your work for mistakes?
3. Do those assignments get turned in on time?
4. Do you ask appropriate questions in class?
5. Do you seek assistance before school or during study hall?
6. Do you study for quizzes (more than one day in advance?)
7. It's been an exciting trimester, and I look forward to the new thrill and challenges 2nd trimester brings! The students have done a nice job transitioning from elementary school to the middle school model with things like organization and accountability. We will continue to work to make each student an independent and self-motivated learner.

Our first quiz of next trimester will be on Monday. Studente received their study guides yesterday and will be taking part in a review game today. We are currently using our History of Our World books which the students do not have a copy of at home. With this in mind, each quiz is tailored to the work we do in class (worksheets and notes). Students are aware that studying from the worksheets that we have completed over the last couple weeks are the tools they need to succeed, as well as the information they need to complete their study guide. With that said, if students would still like to reread the information, they are welcome to check out packets (which are copied pages straight from the book), they can get those from me! Students have already started sharing, and we've had some great discussions as a result! Students should be checking the assignment sheet they received when signing up for their day to present. The expectations are outlined very clearly. Below is a copy of what the students received for directions:

Current Events Assignment
It is your responsibility to bring a current events article and summary on your assigned day. The assignment will not be accepted without a copy of the article you summarized. This means you will receive a late grade because the assignment is not completely ready to go. Remember you can use EBSCO Host (access at home and school) to help you find articles. Your article must be at least 2 paragraphs long. If you are unsure whether it is a reliable source or not, ask me first. (Wikipedia is not a current events source!) The article has to be published within two weeks prior to your presentation.
Your assignment needs to be typed. (4 point penalty if not typed). You have up to 2 weeks to work on this assignment, which is plenty of time to get to a computer lab. Make a list of the 5 Ws (who, what, when where, & why). The list does not have to be complete sentences. Then, from that list, gather your information into a summary paragraph. Your 5-7 sentence paragraph needs to be in complete sentences using your own words. Your paragraph should include information for all 5 Ws. After you summarize the information, include at least one sentence stating what you think will happen next and why. You also must include at least one sentence telling how you feel about your story. What emotions does your story provoke? Please cite your sources; this should include the publication name and publication date. For example: Chicago Tribune, Sept. 1, 2009. You will share your summary with the class.
*Since I am allowing you to choose the best day for you to present your articles, I expect that they will be done ON TIME. Students received a study guide in class today to be completed in preparation for the quiz. All students that thoroughly finish their study guide will take part in the review game tomorrow in class. Students that need to finish their study guides will go to the IMC to do so instead of playing the review game. Students should be looking back through the book, worksheets, and notes to help them find information for the study guide. If the study guide is done well and accurately, and then is used to study, students should do well on the quiz! Preparation is key!

Quiz Corrections

The students have gotten back their first set of quizzes! Overall, students prepared and did well! For the students that are still adjusting, they have the opportunity to earn back a few points through quiz corrections.

Quiz corrections are designed for the occasional "oops," not as a means to constantly improve grades. Students that earn a D or an F on their quiz may go back (using their book, notes, and worksheets) to correct the questions they missed. They will receive PARTIAL credit for their corrections. In most cases this will not bring their grade to a passing grade, but will at least provide an opportunity to fix mistakes and grow. Quiz corrections should not become a routine; they are not a tool created to enforce lack of preparation.

This policy was explained to students today. Students that received a D or an F on the Chapter 1 Quiz will need to return their quiz corrections by this Friday.

Open House

Thank you to all of the parents that came to the Open House last night!
